Keep Corbyn promise to pay Waspi women compensation, Rebecca Long-Bailey urges Keir Starmer
Former shadow minister Rebecca Long-Bailey has publicly challenged Sir Keir to recommit to Jeremy Corbyn’s pledge and hand WASPI women multi-million-pound settlement they were promised.
In 2019, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn announced the party would offer compensation to those affected, promising this would be delivered within Labour’s first full term.
Sir Keir was asked last month whether he stood by the pledge. He decried the situation as a “huge injustice” but declined to make any policy commitment.
Feminist Pioneer Jalner Hanmer Has Died
“Jalna Hanmer was one of the most influential and important feminists of the past decades. A political activist since her teens, and a feminist campaigner for 60 years, Jalna brought women’s voices and the truth about male violence into sociology. She was a pioneer of Women’s Studies, in the days before Judith Butler brought her glitter wrecking ball to the discipline. Jalna did more than most to challenge police and other state agencies that fail women and girls when it comes to male violence, and was one of the first in the UK to dare to organise against men’s abuse of prostituted women in the UK.”
